Ultra Violet Water Treatment

Ultra Violet technology is relatively new technology - early systems appeared towards the end of the 1970s for usage in treating drinking water, and as computerisation developed through the 80s and 90s more advanced controls have become available making them now somewhat sophisticated pieces of hardware.

UV systems can be seen today all over the place - from sewerage works to small garden fish ponds - it's a proven method of killing microbiological contaminents, which has a very high efficiency rate - compared to boiling and condensing water it is over 20,000 times more efficient in terms of energy usage.

UV works by destroying the DNA of bacteria - basically, causing mutations which either cause the organism to be killed off entirely or unable to reproduce. This makes them safe to ingest, and with a 99.99% success rate on a properly specified and maintained system, it more than meets the requirements for disinfection in food/production type environments.

Relatively recently it has been discovered that UV is also capable of killing parasites like Cryptosporidium - it was long thought (until the late 1990s) that the shell of cysts protected the organism from the UV radiation - or at least made the technology questionable enough to cast doubt on it's reliability. In the early days of course, cysts in water were not given too much consideration, however, the 1993 incident in Milwaukee radically raised both public and government awareness of the problems it could cause when entering the water system en-mass.

However, further investigation into the effects of UV on such contaminents has suggested that the efficiency of UV in dealing with crypto and giarda is actually very high indeed, and many foul water treatment works now rely on this method of disinfection as the primary method to kill off such pathogens.

Our range of UV systems is based around the Wedeco/ITT brand from Germany. Wedeco are the largest manufacturer of UV systems based in Europe, for more information please see the link on the left.
